Each number can be written in several ways, for example:
5 4, 0 2 7
Put 5 4, 0 2 7 into the place value table as follows:
Ten Thousands | Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Ones |
---|---|---|---|---|
5 | 4 | 0 | 2 | 7 |
Each digit has a different digit value. For example:
The digit 4 in 54,027 is in the thousands place → its value is 4,000
We can write 54,027 in expanded form as: $$ \begin{align} 54{,}027 & = 50{,}000 + 4{,}000 + 0 + 20 + 7 \\ & = 50{,}000 + 4{,}000 + 20 + 7 \quad \text{(no need to write the 0)} \end{align} $$
Use symbols (a crocodile wanting to eat the bigger number):
When comparing numbers, start from the leftmost digit because it is the highest place value.
Example 1:
$$ 39,124 > 35,498 $$
👉 Look at the ten-thousands place: both are 3
👉 Look at the thousands place: 9 is greater than 5
🐊 The crocodile opens its mouth toward 39,124
Example 2:
$$ 8,491 < 10,342 $$
👉 Look at the ten-thousands place: the right number has 1 but the left has none
🐊 The crocodile opens its mouth toward 10,342
A pattern is a sequence of numbers that changes in a repeated way. At this level, we will “add” or “subtract” the same number repeatedly.
✨ Example:
Start with 2 and add 3 each time → 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, ... (each number increases by 3)
✨ Another example:
Start with 50 and subtract 10 each time → 50, 40, 30, 20, ... (each number decreases by 10)
The topic Numbers up to 100,000 is a key foundation for elementary math learning and elementary math tutoring. If children understand number reading and writing, place value, comparison, and recognizing patterns quickly, it will make learning higher-level math much easier.
For parents who want their children to have a strong foundation—whether the goal is math tutoring Grades 1–6, Grade 6 math for secondary school entrance exams, or extra tutoring to improve elementary math grades ✨ the MJ system offers online elementary math tutoring along with elementary math exercises that are simple to understand and truly effective.
